The Maldives has a reputation for five-star overwater villas, but it is also one of the easiest islands in the Indian Ocean to visit on a modest budget, if you know where to look. A short flight from both Dubai and Colombo puts the islands within reach for a long weekend as well as a longer holiday.
Local islands versus resort islands
Since 2009, Maldivian guesthouses have opened on local islands, at a fraction of the price of a resort, with their own stretch of beach and a public bikini beach nearby for swimwear. You still get turquoise water and white sand, just without the private-island price tag, and many local islands now have a good choice of guesthouses at different price points.
Getting around for less
A speedboat transfer from Malé to a nearby local island costs far less than a resort’s seaplane transfer, and some islands are only an hour or two away. A handful of guesthouse islands are even reachable by a short domestic ferry, which costs a fraction of a private speedboat.
- Choose a local-island guesthouse instead of a resort island
- Travel in the shoulder months for lower rates
- Take a speedboat transfer instead of a seaplane where possible
- Eat at local cafes rather than resort restaurants
When to go
November to April is the dry season and the most popular time to visit, so rates are higher. May to October brings more rain but also quieter islands and better value, especially outside the June to August holiday peak, when both flights and guesthouses can fill up fast. Short, sharp showers are common even in the dry season, so pack a light rain jacket whenever you travel.
What a budget trip includes
A typical budget stay is four or five nights in a guesthouse, breakfast included, with a speedboat transfer each way. It is a world away from an overwater villa, but it is still the Maldives: the same clear water and the same quiet beaches, just with a guesthouse price tag instead of a resort one.
If you still want the overwater villa
If a water villa is the point of the trip, visiting in the shoulder season and booking an entry-level resort can bring the price down significantly compared with peak-season rates at a five-star property. We can compare both options against your budget, so you can see the real difference in price before deciding, including the transfer cost, which can add a meaningful amount to a resort stay.
