About Maldives
The Maldives is a string of coral islands in the Indian Ocean, each one ringed by a shallow lagoon and a reef just offshore. Most trips are built around a single resort island, so the pace is slow: swimming, snorkelling and long lunches by the water.
When to go
The dry season runs from November to April, with calm seas and the best visibility for snorkelling. May to October brings more rain and wind, though resort prices often drop.
Getting around
Most resorts are reached by speedboat or seaplane from Velana International Airport, arranged by the hotel once you land. There is little reason to leave your island: diving, spa treatments and dinner are all on site.
Highlights
- Overwater villas with direct lagoon access
- Snorkelling and diving on house reefs just steps from your room
- Sunset dolphin cruises most resorts can arrange
- Spa treatments in huts built over the water
- Private sandbank picnics for a day away from the resort
Maldives questions
Do I need a visa for the Maldives?
Most nationalities, including UAE and Sri Lankan passport holders, get a free 30-day visa on arrival. You just need a confirmed hotel booking and a return ticket.
Is the Maldives good for families?
Yes. Many resorts have kids clubs, shallow lagoons for swimming and family villas with a second bedroom. Tell us your children’s ages and we will point you to the resorts that suit them best.
How many nights should I book?
Four nights is enough to settle in and enjoy the resort without feeling rushed. Five or more nights suits honeymoons and anyone adding a spa package.
