About Kenya

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s best-known reserve, with open plains, big cats and, between July and October, the Great Migration crossing the Mara River.

When to go

July to October is peak season for the migration. The dry months from January to March also give good game viewing with fewer crowds.

Getting around

Most trips fly from Nairobi to an airstrip near the reserve, then travel by safari jeep for the rest of the stay. Camps arrange all game drives.

Highlights

  • Dawn and dusk game drives with experienced guides
  • The Great Migration crossing the Mara River, July to October
  • Sundowners overlooking the plains
  • A hot air balloon safari at sunrise
  • Visits to a local Maasai village

Kenya questions

Do I need a visa for Kenya?

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before arrival, which we can help you apply for.

Is a safari safe for young children?

Many camps set a minimum age for game drives, often around six years old. Tell us the ages of your children and we will find a suitable camp.

What should I pack for a safari?

Neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sunscreen and a light jacket for cool mornings and evenings. Binoculars are useful but camps often have spares.
