About Azerbaijan
Baku mixes a walled medieval Old City with glass towers built on Caspian oil wealth. Three hours from Dubai, it is one of the easiest short breaks on this list.
When to go
April to June and September to October bring mild weather for walking the Old City. Summers are hot and winters cold and windy off the Caspian.
Getting around
The Old City, the Flame Towers and the Caspian boulevard are all within walking distance of each other. A metro and plenty of taxis cover anywhere further out.
Highlights
- The walled Old City (Icherisheher), a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- The Flame Towers lit up after dark
- The Caspian seafront boulevard, good for an evening walk
- The Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs
- Fire temples and mud volcanoes as a day trip
Azerbaijan questions
Do I need a visa for Azerbaijan?
Most UAE residents and Sri Lankan passport holders need an e-visa, usually issued within a few days. We include this in our Baku packages.
Is three nights enough in Baku?
Yes. Three nights covers the Old City, the Flame Towers and the seafront at an easy pace, with a day spare for a trip out of town.
Is Baku good value?
Yes, hotels and food cost less than most European cities, which is why it suits a short, affordable break.
