Istanbul straddles two continents, with grand mosques, covered bazaars and ferries crossing the Bosphorus at every hour. It rewards slow wandering more than a tight itinerary.

When to go

April to May and September to November bring mild weather and thinner crowds than midsummer. Winters are cool and wet but far less busy.

Getting around

The tram connects the main sights in Sultanahmet, and ferries across the Bosphorus are cheap and scenic. Taxis and ride-hailing apps cover everywhere else.
